Yamen Village Solar Pump Update
In preparation for El Niño, our whole team is working hard on practical solutions to ensure water tanks stay full. Water levels are already very low, and remote communities are being impacted the most.
One solution we are working on is installing a submersible solar-powered well pump in Yamen Village. Access to many villages along the Keram River is by boat only, so a diesel pump that requires fuel to be delivered by boat would be impractical with dropping water levels. Using sunlight for power means Yamen Village will have a solution for that doesn’t rely on rainfall for water.
Our team from Yamen recently made the trip to Samban village, where they were shown how to set up the solar pump. The trip to Samban is a 12-hour journey by foot, only possible when the weather conditions allow. During the walk to Samban, John recorded videos and photos of the impact that the prolonged heat and lack of rain is having on the vegetation, with trees and crops visibly distressed.
With a better understanding of the installation process, the team is now more prepared for when the time comes to install Yamen Village’s pump.
