Hi from Wewak! How are you doing?
Well, we got back to the PNG capital of Port Moresby and had a day layover with a Leprosy Mission friend to recover from 2 nights awake, and to get (at least a bit) used to the heat and humidity again. It was really good, too, that a gal from our church was in Port Moresby at the same time (she organises clinic teams on one of the YWAM medical ships), so we finally got to meet her, and took her along on our quest to see some of PNG’s unique Birds of Paradise.
They are in full plumage at the moment and there is an expansive park out of town that has an incredible collection in walk-through aviaries. Wow!!! Incredible!! Some have brilliant colours and huge plumes under their wings, others are black but with iridescent chest-pieces. Some have loooong trailing tails, some a single curling “wire” of a tail, and some have no tails at all, but long bouncing feathers from their heads. The females of course don’t have the spectacular showy stuff, but they had stripes, or bright blue eyes, and whooped and chattered happily as they flew around. What a show! The park also had thousands of orchids, and some other fascinating critters, too……. several types of unusual pigeons, large friendly hornbills clamouring for attention, cute tree kangaroos, and crocs - one is 45 years old and ENORMOUS! And a large carving at the entrance we thought we would name "My breath in the morning"! That park was truly well worth the visit!!
Then yesterday, we came on to Wewak and had another God-organised meeting! Long-time MAF friends who we haven’t been able to catch up with here for ages were now leaving the country and moving to Suriname (South America) to work. We were going to miss them AGAIN, but they had flight delays, and ended up on our plane! So we talked fast and furious for the entire flight!
Finally arriving here, we spent the rest of the afternoon cleaning the flat…. lots of dust, but only one fat spider and no other bugs. Today has been spent getting organised and sorted, and catching up on all that has happened here since we left.
Hope you have a great weekend!
